Geography Intent, Implementation & Impact

Intent:

The geography curriculum at Winston Way Academy provides children with a relevant, coherent, progressive knowledge of the world and an ability to find their place in it. It starts by looking at local geography (Ilford) and then learning about geography linked to the UK, Europe and the rest of the world. The curriculum does this by focusing on three geographical vertical concepts:

  • Location and place

This focuses on where the place is and what the human and physical characteristics of the place are.

  • Geographical scale

Considering the local, national and global scale and understanding how causes and effects occur at all scales.

  • Interconnections

How are the human and physical worlds connected?

How are different locations connected at different scales?

It is designed in a way which embeds core disciplinary knowledge and gives children the ability to approach challenging geographically-valid questions.

Implementation:

When teachers plan Geography, they provide the following:

  • A knowledge organiser which outlines knowledge (including vocabulary) all children must master

  • A sequence of learning which follows the Rosenshine Principles of Instruction

  • A cycle of lessons for each subject, which carefully plans for progression and depth

  • Low stakes quizzes which are used regularly to support learners’ ability to retrieve and recall knowledge and increase space in the working memory

  • Challenge questions for pupils to apply their learning in a philosophical/open manner

  • Trips and visits from experts who will enhance the learning experience

Impact:

Our Geography Curriculum is high quality, well sequenced and planned to demonstrate progression. We believe that if children are keeping up with the curriculum, they are making good or better progress. We measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:

▪ A reflection on standards achieved against the planned outcomes

▪ Low stakes quizzes (pre-learning and post-learning quiz) for every unit

▪ Pupil’s books

▪ Pupil discussions about their learning

We enhance our curriculum by organising fieldwork opportunities and keeping up to date with current local and worldwide events that happen at the current time.
